We believe there is significant value remaining in shares of Zalicus after the failure of SYNERGY and the discontinuation of Synavive. We would not be selling the stock at this price. In fact, we believe long-term investors should be holding or adding to their position. That being said, we are reducing our rating to Neutral to allow for the lack of near-term catalysts and re-set of expectations in the stock. We see Z160 and Z944 as more significant drivers of valuation in the long-run for Zalicus. With positive phase 2a data in hand, we believe both Z160 and Z944 could command multi-hundred million dollar licensing and collaborative deals in late 2013 or early 2014.
Zalicus exited the second quarter 2012 with $44.1 million. Factoring in burn for the third quarter and the recently completed at the market (ATM) financing that raised $14.7 million in proceeds, and we see nearly $50 million in cash still on the books at the end of the third quarter 2012. We see Zalicus trading side-ways for the near-term, but then trending higher in 2013 in anticipation of the phase 2a data on Z160 in the third quarter 2013. We would be buyers below $0.75 per share. Our target is $1.50 per share.
