August 4 (Renewables Now) - German express mail and delivery service DHL Express announced on Tuesday that it has placed an order to buy 12 fully electric cargo planes from Israeli-born US-based start-up Eviation.
Eviation’s electric aircraft model, dubbed Alice, is ready for its first flight later in 2021, while deliveries to DHL Express are expected in 2024, the courier service said in a press release.
The plane will first be available in the US and EU markets, Eviation says on its website.
Alice could be charged in 30 minutes or less per flight hour, which can be done while the plane is being loaded and unloaded.
With a single charge, Alice can reach a maximum range of up to 815 kilometres (440 nautical miles). It can carry 1,200 kilogrammes (2,600 lbs) and needs one pilot, DHL Express said.
“We firmly believe in a future with zero-emission logistics. Therefore, our investments always follow the objective of improving our carbon footprint. On our way to clean logistics operations, the electrification of every transport mode plays a crucial role and will significantly contribute to our overall sustainability goal of zero emissions,” said John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express.
The company’s parent group, Deutsche Post AG (ETR
PW), committed to investing EUR 7 billion (USD 8.33bn) in measures to reduce its carbon footprint by 2030.
