JP Morgan accused of driving down Washington Mutual’s share price
JP Morgan Chase is being accused of attempting to drive down Washington Mutual’s share price ahead of the Seattle-based bank’s collapse at the height of the financial crisis in September 2008.

In fresh filings in US bankruptcy court, WaMu’s receivers allege that JP Morgan disclosed confidential information “to government regulators, ratings agencies, media and investors in an effort to harm WaMu by driving down WaMu’s credit rating and share price.”
JP Morgan expressed an interest in rescuing WaMu in early September but the expression came to nothing. Following a series of damaging downgrades from credit ratings agencies, the smaller bank’s shares plummeted, leading to its eventual collapse.
After JP Morgan Chase's Washington Mutual deal, rescue talk turns to Wachovia
bank was seized by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) on September 25, 2008, and JP Morgan immediately bought its assets in a government-brokered fire-sale for $1.9bn.
At the time the deal was seen being very positive for JP Morgan chairman Jamie Dimon, buying WaMu’s 2,200-branch network – much of which was on the West Coast where his Chase retail format was under-represented – as well as its $310bn of deposits and $176bn mortgage book.
WaMu’s receivers have asked a bankruptcy judge to compel the Federal Reserve, the FDIC, the Treasury and around a dozen government bodies and institutions to hand over documents relating to the bank’s collapse.
The filing cites an internal email from one JP Morgan member of staff to another which purports to show that the bank’s board were contacted by the FDIC about possibly buying WaMu a week before it was eventually seized.
The receivers said they need to determine if the documents have valuable claims against regulators and others that could be pursued on behalf of its creditors.
The new filing comes two months after a judge dismissed attempts by WaMu employees to force JP Morgan to reinstate their pensions, with the banking conglomerate pointing out it bought only WaMu’s assets, not the holding company.
A spokesman for JP Morgan Chase did not comment.
