Cerus to Participate in Gates Foundation-Funded Effort to support Ebola-Affected Countries
Cerus’ INTERCEPT Blood System will be included as part of a broad effort supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to produce and evaluate convalescent plasma as a potential therapy for people infected with Ebola in Guinea and other Ebola-affected countries. The transfusion of plasma from recovered Ebola virus patients, or convalescent plasma, has demonstrated benefit in patients with acute Ebola virus infections. However, recovered patients may carry undetected pathogens due to prior exposure. Pathogen inactivation helps reduce this risk of transfusion-transmitted infection by inactivating potentially harmful organisms such as malaria or HIV that may be present in convalescent plasma.
This follows a recent announcement regarding Cerus’ submission of a clinical protocol to the U.S. FDA to make INTERCEPT available under a Compassionate Use Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) for the treatment of convalescent plasma that could be provided to U.S. Ebola patients for whom the treating physician believes the treatment may provide a benefit.
