You can buy and sell shares all day long. It doesn't create or destroy them. It's called trading. The same shares are used over and over.
Back to my point, I'll quote from the article in the Portland Business Journal (bizjournals.com) about the forced liquidation. (liquidation means to sell, not destroy)
"The forced sale of WaMu shares could affect other shareholders who might see the value of their stock fall. "
We, being the other shareholders, would obviously see our stock prices fall a bit if millions of shares were dumped.
