US President Donald Trump is expected to issue a directive on Tuesday restoring "maximum pressure" on Iran, Reuters reported citing a US official.
Trump's instructions on Iran are aimed at denying Washington's Mideast nemesis all paths to a nuclear weapon and countering Iran's "malign influence," the official was quoted as saying.
The policy will direct the US treasury secretary to impose "maximum economic pressure" on Iran, the official said, including sanctions and enforcement mechanisms on those violating existing sanctions.
The US Secretary of State will modify or rescind existing sanctions waivers and cooperate with the treasury to implement a campaign "aimed at driving Iran's oil exports to zero," the official added.
