Investment Thesis

The Bermuda-based Teekay LNG Partners LP (NYSE:TGP) released its first-quarter results on May 13, 2021.

Another good quarter for this company, as we will see later in this article, with a 15% increase of the cash distribution to $0.2875 per common unit for the quarter ended March 31, 2021.

It represents a 15% increase over the previous quarter’s distribution. This translates to $1.15 per common unit on an annualized basis or a yield of 7.6%.

As we can see below, TGP has done quite well on an annualized basis, with an increase of 42%.

Data by YCharts

The investment thesis remains the same for TGP since my preceding article. The LNG sector is growing and will support the company for decades.

In its latest annual LNG Outlook, Shell said that Global LNG trade increased to 360M tonnes in 2020 despite the unprecedented volatility caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The report also forecasts that global LNG demand is expected to reach 700M tonnes by 2040. Nearly half of gas demand growth in the next 20 years is anticipated to be coming from Asia.

Global LNG demand is expected to reach 700 million tonnes by 2040, according to forecasts, as demand for natural gas continues to grow strongly in Asia and gains further traction in powering hard-to-electrify sectors. As a result, more supply investment will be needed to avoid the estimated supply demand gap in the middle of the current decade.
Thus, I recommend accumulating the stock with a long time horizon of about five to ten years.

However, it is crucial to trade short term about 30% of your overall position to take advantage of the volatility. Using technical analysis helps.

Fleet Status presentation

Teekay LNG's fleet presents a strong profile:

  • Visibility: 98% of the fleet is on a fixed rate for 2021 and 89% for 2022, with average total fleet age of 9 years.
  • Reliability: The company transports 9% of the World's seaborne LNG. The LNG is a growing business playing a key role in the decarbonization actual uptrend.
  • Strength: Generates $8.8 billion of forward-fees-based revenue and $6.3 billion total forward-adjusted EBITDA.

CEO Mark Kremin said in the conference call:

The first quarter of 2021 was another solid quarter for us, generating adjusted net income of $60.5 million, or $0.61 per unit, slightly higher than last quarter’s results and higher than the same quarter 1 year ago. In March and April, we secured charters for 3 of our LNG carriers as we will detail on the next two slides. Overall, we are now 98% fixed for the remainder of 2021 and 89% fixed for 2022.
