Bloomberg reported that TSLA has secured its own lithium mining rights in Nevada. Originally, TSLA was seeking to forge a deal with Cypress Development Corp. in Nevada to provide it with lithium extracted from clay deposits.
- Unable to reach a deal, TSLA decided to take mining it its own hands by gaining access to 10,000 acres of lithium-rich clay deposits in Nevada.
Investors are reacting positively to the news because the company is moving to take control of one of its most important supply chains. Prior to TSLA's agreement with Piedmont, the company bought most of its lithium from Ganfeng, China's largest lithium producer, and Australia's Kidman Resources.
By mining its own lithium, TSLA also will be less exposed to volatile commodity prices.
However, there are plenty of uncertainties and risks. For starters, TSLA has no experience in mining. To expect the EV maker to jump into a completely new operation without encountering significant set-backs seems unrealistic.
Furthermore, TSLA plans to use an unproven mining method to extract the lithium. Specifically, the company will attempt to use sodium chloride, instead of more expense chemical reagents, to obtain the lithium. In fact, lithium has never been successfully mined on a commercial basis from clay using any method.
If Musk's vision for TSLA to become its own supplier of lithium comes to fruition, it will be a game-changing development that could allow TSLA to mass produce less expensive vehicles. As followers of TSLA are keenly aware, Musk thinks big, but sometimes his lofty aspirations aren't realized in a timely manner, or, at all. Whether he makes good on this plan remains to be seen, but it will be intriguing to see how this plays out.
